3 1/2 years ago, I was working an event that benefitted a local rescue group. I met a lady who invited me to join her on Thursday nights to walk dogs who were en route to their forever homes. Several weeks later, I went to see what this was all about. At the Petro Truck Stop just outside of Birmingham, AL, I find a large trailer full of precious pups….all shapes, sizes, ages. I helped to walk them, love on them, play with them. My heart was full by the time I got home and I was hooked! I MIGHT have only missed 2 trips since then.
Fast forward to January 2016. We lost our beloved Dixie to heart failure after 15 years. Our hearts were broken and we wondered if we could ever have the love for another dog that we did for her. Adella shared a video in March of one of their fosters, Maggie, who was ready for adoption. I showed it to my husband and he said, “let’s check her out”.
The rest is history! Maggie Moo Moo joined our family on May 27, 2016. We had our own Gotcha Day with the RRT Birmingham Angels! It took Maggie about 4 days to warm up to Mickey as she was very leery of men, but the two of them have been inseparable since. She has brought such joy to our family!! (We even bought a new house to get her a bigger yard to run in.) Greg and Adella did a fabulous job of raising and training her. Maggie goes to visit Greg on occasion as he passes through town. And then Adella made the trip down for Ohio and visited Maggie here! What a fun reunion we had!!
I am so very grateful for Rescue Road Trips and the things I have learned since becoming involved with them. Not only has my own family grown, but I have gained so many other friends from Texas to to New England through dogs I have walked as a volunteer. I still follow many of them and their families through Facebook. I have also learned of the horrible plight that so many dogs suffer roaming the streets, being bred to fight, and living out their days with pain and hunger or cooped up in shelters. The work never ends. Thank you RRT!
